St. Jude to Host Second Annual Raise a Glass Fundraiser

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a leader in the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer, will host its annual Raise a Glass for St. Jude on Nov. 9 at The Clayton House in Scottsdale. Through this one-of-a-kind event, St. Jude hopes to raise more than $140,000 for the kids of St. Jude.

The evening will feature food and wine pairings from exclusive West Coast wineries, live and silent auction items, and live entertainment. Guests also will have the opportunity to hear about the impact of St. Jude firsthand from a local patient.

Proceeds from the event will help St. Jude generate the lifesaving results for children and their families. St. Jude families never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing or food—because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.

Notre Dame Prep Hires Amanda Burbridge to Lead Volleyball Program

The Notre Dame Prep Saints have hired Amanda Burbridge to run the volleyball program at the Catholic preparatory high school, located in Scottsdale. Burbridge will take over as the varsity girls volleyball head coach for the 2018-19 season.

“The vision Amanda presented for our volleyball program during this search, as well as the character, integrity and leadership skills she displayed as assistant coach last season makes her the right coach for the Saints,” says NDP Athletic Director Mark Cisterna.

Amanda has 14 years of volleyball coaching experience and opened Revolution Volleyball Academy in Phoenix six years ago, where she trains volleyball athletes from ages 9 to18.

As a former Arizona State University Sun Devil, Amanda was named most valuable player and team captain in 1998, 1999 and 2000. She holds three records at ASU and was named first team All PAC-10 Conference all four years while attending Arizona State University. In 2010, she was inducted into the ASU Hall of Fame.

“I love the culture at NDP and the sense of family that is evident here. I’m looking forward to a great season,” Amanda says.

Six Valley Restaurants Make OpenTable’s 100 Best Al Fresco Restaurants in America

OpenTable, the world’s leading provider of online restaurant reservations, recently unveiled the 100 Best Al Fresco Restaurants in America for 2018. The list is generated solely from more than 12 million verified OpenTable diner reviews for more than 27,000 restaurants in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. collected between May 1, 2017, and April 30, 2018. All restaurants with a minimum overall score and number of qualifying reviews were included for consideration. Qualifying restaurants were then scored and sorted according to the percentage of reviews for which “outdoor dining” was selected as a special feature.

Based on this methodology, listed alphabetically, six local restaurants made the prestigious list: Cafe Monarch, El Chorro, Gertrude’s, LON’s at the Hermosa, Olive & Ivy Restaurant & Marketplace, and Tonto Bar & Grill. To view the complete list, visit OpenTable.com.

Ninth Annual Culinary Event Raises $278,000 for ALS

On June 2, the ALS Association Arizona Chapter hosted Bite Nite to benefit the families and patients living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Every year the Arizona chapter serves more than 400 patients. The annual event raised a record amount of $278,000 that will go toward patient and family services, community outreach, medical equipment and to help support the newly established Living with ALS program to help patients live their lives to the fullest.

“The ALS Association is the only national nonprofit solely devoted to raising awareness and funds for ALS,” said Taryn Norley, executive director of the ALS Association Arizona Chapter.

More than 800 guests attended the event at the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa in Scottsdale to enjoy signature dishes from 16 restaurants. As part of the main event, guests voted for their favorite dish via text. This year, the title of “Best Bite” went to Ling & Louie’s Asian Bar and Grill.
